Hints On chinese antique furniture

Country furniture is a specialized subject, and those attracted to it are well advised to seek out dealers and auctioneers with a detailed knowledge of their regional types. The same applies to sophisticated, mainstream furniture. There are still a few dealers surviving with an encyclopedic knowledge that covers just about everything from fine furniture to vintage cars, but even they will admit, under pressure, that they can no longer keep up with I market fluctuations. Specialization is the order of the day.

Oriental and Persian Area Rug Styles - Patterns and Designs

Fri, 18 Jul 2008 23:21:57 -0600
The older an oriental rug is, the greater its value. In Persian Area Rugs, the hand made rugs are one of a kind but there are many, listed by the city of production, from Arak to Tabriz and Tribal, which are the rugs woven by nomadic groups. Perhaps the most well-known of the Tabriz works are the twin Ardabil carpets most likely made for the shrine at Ardabil, today in the collections of the Victoria and Albert.

Tips About antique crystal jewelry

Never use furniture oil such as lemon oil on antique furniture. Just wipe it with a damp cloth or use only clear paste wax (Minwax or beeswax) to keep the wood in good condition.

Don't assume too much about the dealers knowledge from their dress or demeanor. There are veritable Phd's in antiques walking around out there who don't care much about the suit and tie look (maybe that's part of why they chose this profession). Some dealers are very knowledgable about every item they carry, others aren't. Talking with someone a while about the items in their selection will help you determine if they have done the research to know a piece's true value or not.

The condition of any piece has direct bearing on its value. But be careful that you understand what condition means. Often a piece of furniture with its original cracked and battered finish will be worth more than if you have it sanded and refinished. Condition vs. damage is relative to each individual piece. Research your areas of interest and understand what does and does not constitute value.

Antique Furniture - Antique Mahogany Can't Be Beat

By Shane Dayton

There are many different types of antique furniture out there, but if you want really beautiful, well made wooden antique furniture, then you need to look for mahogany. Furniture made of mahogany wood tends to have a stunningly beautiful and majestic appearance.

Mahogany is a hard wood native to northern South America and the West Indies, and was an extremely popular choice for furniture in England during the mid-1700's.

Mahogany is either a dark deep red color, or sometimes a deep dark brown, or often times a mix between the two. Red mahogany is generally from the West Indies while brown mahogany is generally native to South America.

This type of wood isn't only pleasing to the eye, but it is also durable. This is a favorite type of wood for many uses, from boat making to furniture, and also one of the most expensive types of wood because of its relatively rare occurrence, and its undeniable beauty.

Antique mahogany furniture comes mostly from English tradition. Most of the antique mahogany furniture you'll find was made in the 1700s. Not only did it look good, but it would hold up for generations, giving buyers a possession they could hand down through the generations.

Antique mahogany furniture tends to be really expensive, so if you love the look but the prices are too high you might want to consider either reproduction furniture, or look in smaller town antique stores. It can be far cheaper to rent a truck and move several cheaper pieces from a small town than it is to buy it in a large city antique store.

LARGER REPAIRS. Before tackling a large repair, especially one that's going to be prominent when the furniture is displayed, be sure that you've practiced on easier pieces. If you're restoring veneer or inlay, or even paint or varnish, experiment with several less valuable pieces first. Also, check your public library or bookstores for manuals that explain construction and repair of the kind of furniture you own. Many of them provide useful tips. Above all, learn all that you can before you start any repair, particularly if the furniture has sentimental value. Start with easy fixes, and practice to build your knowledge and confidence before attempting big or tricky repairs. No antique furniture will look "like new" again, and in most cases, it shouldn't. But, if you treat your antiques well, they will become more valuable each year, and be treasured by each generation that owns them.
